Previously, we’ve posted on the functionality of GazeTV here.
We also wanted to talk in more detail about the “Why”. At GazeTV, we really believe every second does count. Every minute you are posting takes time (which on many platforms is not transparently compensated). More importantly, all those minutes or hours that you watch, like and share have value that is largely unrecognized (and unrewarded) by other platforms. The documentary “The Social Dilemma” points out that only tech and drug dealers call their end clients “users” at GazeTV, we agree. We don’t want “users” we aim to build a community.
How do you build a community? Well, first, you move the product space. The community are no longer a passive product, they are incentivized to like, share and comment on content. We do this by taking a small % of the total value generated by all videos and rolling it back into a pool (the “Engagement Reward Pool”) that gets recirculation in the system to reward the community for engagement. Every second does count.
Second, the founding team are strong believers in the concept of Free Speech, we also believe in a robust discussion of ideas. However we totally embrace that on a platform shared with children, minorities and other nationalities, the norms of ‘Free Speech” are not your norms. They are also not our norms (we are a diverse group but can’t be everything to everyone — one of the problems with Youtube, which they are failing to address.) Therefore, we will also reward the community that reports any inappropriate, sensitive or challenging content. We will follow up on these reports to ensure they are fair, and if necessary, we will take action. More on this in a future post.
Third, we aim to curate our content. Not only will we look at reports (above) but we prefer original or remixed content, rather than simply any content. Therefore our approach is to engage with “Creators” (We like people who make things) first (during our closed Beta and going forward.) By attracting creators and providing them a simple way to migrate over content from existing platforms, we aim to provide them better analytics, a new, engaged fanbase, and fair and transparent payment.
Fourth, we don’t aim to overtake those big platforms (at least not yet:) but to be a more targeted, higher quality platform because we control for content, remove noise, reward fairly and (at launch at least) have lower volume of content but cross into markets like China (unlike Facebook and Youtube).
So, where does that leave us? We are building a community that is linked to a platform, rather than a platform that acts as a parasite on its users, monetizing their attention for the platform’s benefit. Instead, we’ll monetize for them. We do this by having an infrastructure layer built on blockchain.
In closing, we look around and what we see is too many big platforms harvesting user data, selling ads, making a few key influencers who comply with some fairly opaque “standards” do well while the rest of us…become users.
What if there was a platform that empowered people, built engaged communities, rewarded people and creators fairly (in a kind of online co-op model) with the aim of creating a fun, nice interesting and creative place to be online? That’s Why.
